Welcome to www.MyBraveDad.org
Hello, my name is Angela Shawcroft, and in 2005 my lovely Dad was diagnosed with advanced stomach and oesophageal cancer. Sadly, my lovely Dad recently lost this battle.
He was the kindest and bravest gentleman I have ever known, and was still fighting this cruel disease with the same quiet dignity, nearly 4 years after diagnosis. They estimated he would be lucky to have 4 months.
My world revolves around my family and I made a pledge in 2005...
to raise £1,000,000 in honour of my one-in-a-million Dad.
My Mum is
just as brave and inspiring, but the domain name "www.mybravedadandwonderfulmum.org" was just too long! :o)
I realise that I will be fund raising for the rest of my life!
So Far...
I'm from Chesterfield, Derbyshire, UK and I am a graphic designer/illustrator by trade (Alf Designs). Since early 2005 I have helped to raise over £50,000 for many charities by working on projects including the design and marketing of cheeky (but tasteful) calendars (not an easy job for a shy prude!).
I was aiming to raise at least another £3,000 with the current calendar (details listed here: Charity), which would really help to make a mark on my 'fundometer' - inspired by Blue Peter! :-)
Each year I take part in Race For Life, in 2010 (my 6th) there will be 8 of us!
I don't find any of this easy, as we have always been a very private family, but I can't do this without the help of others. I'm quite a shy, behind the scenes sort of person, so if any of my more vocal friends would like to get involved in future, please let me know!
At this point though, I would like to point out that I have no affiliation with anyone else whatsoever, and any claims as such are completely false.
I am not a charity and do not claim to be. My fundraising and charity work is voluntary and all money raised is either handled directly by the charities involved or through sites like justgiving.com.
"But what's in it for her?"
The organisations that I help have given me more precious time with my Dad, so I give my time to help them - it really is that simple and genuine!
I've come to the conclusion that this labour of love has grown to something bigger than just me trying to honour my family. As a friend wrote on my justgiving site:
"for one and all, our brave fathers"
Current Projects...
Midsummer Midnight Walk (13.5 miles) for Ashgate Hospice
Race For Life (5km, Chesterfield) for Cancer research UK
Charity Calendar (for 2011)... possibly...
I have direct donation sites set up with justgiving.com (links are to the right if you would care to make a much appreciated donation straight to either Cancer Research UK or to Ashgate Hospice for these events)
"Thank you xx"
